UN Youth Envoy visits Bangladesh

Ms. Jayathma Wickramanayake, the UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth, visited Bangladesh from August 5-11, 2018. She came to Bangladesh upon invitation from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Government of Bangladesh, to mark this year's International Youth Day. During her visit, the Youth Envoy young people from different platforms, youth leaders from youth organizations, and kicked off a dialogue on #SafeSpaces4Youth. The UN Youth Envoy meet the young diplomats and Parliament Members and talked about young people's engagement in politics and policy making process. She also met the Honorable Speaker of the National Parliament of Bangladesh, Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, MP. She also visited an adolescent club in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Girls' School, supported by UNFPA Bangladesh. The Youth Envoy also visited a children-adolescent club in Mirpur Pora Bosti (???? ?????) and witness how children and adolescent in urban slums can have safe space to explore their potentials. This initiative is supported by UNICEF Bangladesh. Adolescent clubs like these are good examples of safe spaces for youth where they can be equipped with life skills and knowledge they need. It uses innovative approaches to positively shift attitudes and behaviors around gender roles, gender-based violence, and sexual and reproductive health. The UN Youth Envoy also visited Cox's Bazar to engage both with young people from local community, young humanitarian volunteers, and young Rohingya refugees.
