UN Country Team Retreat 2012

Savar, 15-16 February 2012: Annually, the UN country team gathers to reflect on their strategic planning in order to ensure its relevance in the changing context.  The key objective of this year’s retreat, is to motivate UN agency colleagues to re-think from a strategic point, within and beyond the UNDAF, where necessary and discuss key priority policies for immediate and long-term undertaking. Through this exercise, the UN Country Team also aims to draw out a path on how to operationalize the UNDAF.

On the first day, the Country Team engaged in an apt and intellectual discussion with three guest speakers, Ms. Rasheda K. Chowdhur, Mr. Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad and Ms. Sultana Kamal about the current development context in the areas of social policies, governance and human rights. At the end of the session, UNHCR presented a documentary on Rohingya refugees, followed by exchange of views on the current situation. On the second day, with respective agency technical experts, the Country Team discussed the next steps in UNDAF Pillar evolution, geographical targeting, monitoring and evaluation, resource mobilization and joint programming, UN’s role in aid effectiveness agenda, new humanitarian response and preparedness architecture and finally the RCO’s support and services expected from the UNCT. A simulation on mass casualty incident management was demonstrated by the UNDSS team after the lunch break.

Bangladesh Country Analysis

During the summer of 2010,  the UN System worked closely with the Government of Bangladesh to undertake a comprehensive joint assessment of Bangladesh’s MDG status and progress. The results are documented in the ‘MDG Progress Report 2011’ published by the General Economics Division (GED), Bangladesh Planning Commission. Given the scope and results of the assessment, the UN Country Team agreed that a separate UN Common Country Assessment (CCA) would not be required. The assessment thus served as Bangladesh’s country analysis, identifying key development challenges, as the first step in the UNDAF process.
