Womun / Volume 26, Issues 03 - 09

I started as Publications Chairperson in September 2001, after Jean Sack’s resignation and introduced a new format for the newsletter in A5-size booklet form to make it more compact, easier to store, and bind together.

Each Board member was given a page for their reports or announcements with photos. Guest speakers to the General Meetings were interviewed beforehand. Pictorial essays of the previous month’s programmes, trips, and activities were prominently displayed in order to stimulate interest in UNWA activities.

·               Photographer: Yuko Nakamura has been extremely hardworking and conscientious about attending functions so she can take pictures. We included a few pictures in WOMUN, and published the whole collection on the website for members to download.

·               Columnist: Hitomi Glemarec’s contributions to the Dec-Jan newsletter were very welcome indeed. She wrote about the general meeting and several activities, and, together with Yuko’s pictures, contributed greatly to the newsletter.

·               Distribution of the newsletters is getting better. UN members get their copies through the UN office pouch system, and Associate Members get their copies through volunteer couriers:

1.              Baridhara: Patsy Lobo, Dolly Rahman

2.              Gulshan: Yukiko Kukita, Naaz Farhana Ahmed, Tsega Berecket

3.              Banani: Hitomi Glemarec

·               Printing: the UNDP office is photocopying the newsletter. Mr. Abul Hashem receives the final version which is then photocopied, folded and stapled (if they have time, if not, the stapling is done at my house), and distributes the copies for UN members to the different UN offices. The rest of the copies are sent back to me, I label them and send them to the volunteer couriers who deliver them to associate members. Photocopying and stapling were previously done by Royal Blue in Gulshan, where the quality was not very consistent, and the cost was too high for our administrative budget.

I would like to thank Jean Sack, former Publications Chair, for her work on publications from April 2001 to September 2001. Jean was so much better than I was in collecting articles for WOMUN, and I enjoyed doing just the layout and design for her those months. But as we never seem to have enough time for everything we want to do, I tried to trim down the newsletter to a minimum - keeping it simply informative of the different UNWA activities. I also kept the pages to a minimum in order to save on paper and other costs for our current printer.

Mostly, I would like to thank the UNDP office for all the help in printing the newsletters; without which we would have to raise our membership dues to cover the cost. Our distribution volunteers deserve a big thank you from all of us, for ensuring that we get our newsletters within the week it is published. Finally, thank you to Yuko for all the pictures - they helped a lot to document all our different activities!
