Settling in Bangladesh

Chapter 6

Banking Information

(Excerpts, edited and abridged)

Approved Currencies

US dollars, pounds sterling, French francs, Japanese yen, and deutschmark are the only currencies in which the Bangladesh Central Bank will deal. Remittances should be made in these, otherwise there will be an additional charge (as high as 5% of the amount involved) and a delay of as long as a week for the conversion.

On Arrival at ZIA International Airport

You can bring in as much money as you like as long as you declare it at the airport. Form FMJ is what you must fill in. It applies to cash, traveller's cheques, jewellery and other items of value. If you miss it at the airport, you cannot fill it in later. Make sure it is signed by a customs officer.

Without making this declaration, you can bring in US$5,000 in cash and in traveller's cheques (but see the regulations regarding the export of cash). Do not bring in any sort of gold or silver bullion, gold sheets, biscuits or coins. Gold smuggling is a serious crime in Bangladesh and there is no point in courting trouble.
