Settling in Bangladesh

Chapter 18

Health

(Excerpts, edited and abridged)

General

For about eight months of the year, the weather is hot and humid, a favourable environment for disease-causing organisms.

Also keep in mind that on your first weeks, you will feel depressed (missing old friends, old habits, etc), so take a lot of reading material to keep your mind occupied while your body is getting used to the new place. It's good to bring along a laptop so you can keep those emails going between you and your family, old friends and relatives. Your husband will be too busy getting used to his new job to notice that you are getting depressed. Your children will be too busy complaining about their new schools to worry about your depression. Remember to take care of your mental health as well as the health of your family!

Recommendations

  • Have a full medical and dental exam before leaving home. Bring all your records, x-rays, and prescription medicines.

  • there is a UN Staff Clinic where the cost for medical treatment for staff and their families is minimal. However, take out a comprehensive medical insurance cover through your agency or privately that covers emergency air evacuation in case of medical crisis.

  • Consult your doctor about the need for these vaccinations: TB, diphtheria, poliomyelitis, tetanus, typhoid, meningitis, hepatitis A & B, anti-rabies, encephalitis, etc. and decide what you should take.

  • Heat rashes in the summer is common. Always have baby powder close at hand. Dab it everywhere it gets sweaty and hot to prevent rashes and itching.

  • Sinus problems and allergies flare when pollution is high especially in winter when dust gathers during rainless months.

  • Drink a lot of water, exercise regularly and take more showers and more care of yourself.
