Letter from the President

There is a brand new look to the WOMUN as you would have noticed! We now have a concise pocket-size version, without compromising on the content and quality. It can be neatly accommodated in your handbag! This has been possible thanks to the computer talents, efficiency and efforts of our new Publications Chair – Liti Lissner.

Now that most of us are back after a relaxing holiday, there are a series of UNWA events to plan and look forward to. We shall have the General Meeting on Saturday 8 September 2001 at 10.30 am at the Sonargaon Hotel. I hope to see a large attendance. Then in October we have the UN Day closely followed by the UN Ball.

The UN Day which annually falls on 24 October is a proud day for all UNWA members. In the words of Robert Muller, "The UN System with its specialized agencies and world programmes, illustrates the vastness of today’s world cooperation and seeks to create peace, build bridges and ensure greater fulfilment of human life to an extent which no philosopher, prophet or social reformer would have ever dreamed possible". Let us celebrate the greatness of the United Nations in an appropriate way this year.

The UN Ball is on Thursday, 25 October 2001. Please look out for more details and make sure that your spouse is positively in Dhaka, so that both of you can attend the grandest event in the Dhaka calendar! We need the help and support of every UNWA member to make the UN Ball the success it has always been.

I regret to inform you that Jean Sack our Publications Chair opted to resign due to other commitments. Jean did a brilliant and commendable job and devoted a great deal of her time to WOMUN. Thank you Jean and we hope you will continue to involve yourself in some of our activities

We are sorry to lose Kendra Collins who took over the UN Ball Chair. Kendra is posted to Indonesia. She worked tirelessly during the holidays, getting the spadework done for the UN Ball, while most of us were away. Thank you Kendra for all your efforts. We hope we can build on the foundation you have left behind. We are lucky to have Safinaz Bhai and Renu Paryani as members of the UN Ball Committee.

I hope to see all of you at the General Meeting.         Patsy Lobo
