Letter from the President

Dear Friends,

patsy_smaller.jpg (11779 bytes)The horrific events of 11 September 2001 in New York and Washington have dominated our thoughts, conversations and life in the last couple of days. The havoc, the destruction, the needless deaths of more than 5,000 innocent lives and the trauma it has brought to hundreds of families and friends was most tragic and heart-rending. It has naturally raised a global outpouring of sympathy and compassion. On one side, this was yet another example of "Man’s Inhumanity to Man" but on the other, amidst such calamity, we witnessed the many acts of heroism, kindness, caring, sacrifice and love.

We express our sympathy and solidarity with the American people and pray for peace and healing. Let us also remember that one nation alone cannot triumph in the fight against terrorism. It needs the help of all freedom-loving people everywhere.

Dr. Caroline Newberger of the Harvard Medical School has said " This tragedy is going to affect how we relate to our children and prepare them for the world ". I feel we should teach our children that Planet Earth is their Home and all humanity irrespective of nationality, race, colour or economic status is their extended Family. We need more prayers.

The above thoughts seem to be appropriate as we approach UN DAY on 24 October. As in previous years, we will have an Exhibition on the contributions of the various UN agencies in Bangladesh. UNWA will also proudly exhibit glimpses of its work. Please come in large numbers and bring your friends along to Sonargaon Hotel to see the exhibition and attend the general meeting at 11 am. It is an occasion to show our solidarity with the UN and show appreciation of the commendable work being done by various UN agencies. A reminder - please bring snacks to share with friends.

UN Day will be followed by the UN BALL on Thursday 25 October 2001 at Sonargaon Hotel from 7 pm onwards. Please mark your calendar. We need many volunteers to help out at the Ball as well as in the preparatory activities such as contacting donors/sponsors, soliciting raffle prizes, selling raffle tickets etc. Please contact any of the Board members. Most of all - buy your tickets on time. I can assure you of an enjoyable evening but more importantly your presence will contribute to worthy causes supported by UNWA.

I conclude with the thought that the recent tragedy in America only confirms the need to keep working with the UNITED NATIONS, so that it can play its role in ending poverty, bringing stability and establishing Peace to all people of all nations.      Patsy Lobo
