"Meghla
Akash", Bengali Feature Film on AIDS
"Meghla Akash", or cloudy sky is a new feature film made in Bangladesh. It has lots of music, dancing and a dramatic story line – and a serious message about HIV/AIDS; its impact on individuals, family and the society. Reviewing the film in The Independent, Towheed Feroze noted that, "Meghla Akash supplies (entertainment)… and some very powerful messages of women empowerment, gender bias, premature pregnancy, AIDS awareness, problems of indiscrimate sex and so on." The story is about a young rural woman, Mousumi, and the tragedy that overcomes her as she attempts a love marriage. She is abandoned by her boyfriend, goes to the city – and is then overtaken by events, with tragic consequences. The AIDS messages are integrated throughout the film, and a special performance is given by a well known actress, Shabana Azmi, who appears as a doctor who gives basic information on AIDS. As Feroze notes, "So, it is actually education, entertainment, education and then again entertainment". A great combination – and one which it is expected will have an impact on the audience. Note: UNWA will try to arrange a showing of the film, with English sub-titles, at a future date. |
