Bangladesh
challenges all of us… poverty, pollution, and being far from home. It is
easy to focus on what we are missing and to be negative But there is much
to appreciate about Bangladesh, and the people here.
Some
of my favourite things about Bangladesh include:
-
the
curious and amazing sights of Dhaka:
baby taxis and rickshaws carrying the most amazing loads! The curious
road signs (no hand carts; no rickshaws), and small school children
scrubbed within an inch of their lives, beautifully done up for school
every morning; the garment workers walking to work in the morning,
laughing, confident and proud. And today I saw a Rickshaw van (the
kind used for taking kids to school), with USAID stickers on the back.
Good of the American taxpayers to support local transport!
-
the
ease of calling carpenters, tailors and others to fix things around
the house: try this in
London! Not to mention the difference in cost.
-
the
warmth and care of the people:
I have always enjoyed the warmth of people here. This was brought home
to me recently, when I had a bereavement in my family. My Bangladeshi
colleagues and friends were wonderful – very warm and caring.
Including very senior government officials.
These
are some of my favourite things about Bangladesh after living here for 18
months.
And
what about you? Can you tell me three of your favorite things about
Bangladesh? Send these to me at nfee@worldbank.org
and we will include them in a future issue of Womun.
