Message from the UNWA President, Tazeen Rehman

Dear Members,UNWA President 2002-3 Tazeen Rehman

Looking back as we approach the end of the year, we can say that 2002 has been successful for UNWA in many ways.

This year, guest speakers were invited in keeping with important UN days for that particular month. We had Mr. Mahfuz Anam to speak on the exploitation of women, Mr. Inam-ul-Haq to highlight environmental issues in Bangladesh, Ms. Bui Thi Lan to speak on FAO’s role in solving agricultural and food problems, and Mr. Wolfgang Vollman of UNESCO to talk on literacy issues of women.

In October we held the UN ball, which was a great success. We have also had a fashion show, cultural lunches and an Iftar party.

UNWA board members have tried to arrange a variety of activities. As you know, a great deal of effort is required to organize these events. However, it is discouraging to see that only a few members participate. An organization such as UNWA is successful only if its members are involved. It can grow only as far as its members are willing to go. I would like to request all members to make an effort to attend monthly meetings. They are usually organized on a Saturday so that working women can also participate.

Being the year’s end, there are many postings and transfers. Although this is part of the system, we at UNWA will be parting with two of our invaluable members. Hitomi Glemarec will be leaving early next year for New York. Her contribution as Secretary has been superb. She has been a devoted worker, never reluctant to handle anything.

Another important member, Elizabeth Bautista, will move in February. She has contributed as Secretary and is now Hospitality Chairperson. We have profited from her experience especially because all other board member were new. Thank you Hitomi and Elizabeth for your support. Our best wishes are with you for a bright future.

I would also like to take this opportunity to wish our Muslim members a Happy Eid and our Christian members a Merry Christmas. And to everyone, a Happy New Year. May this year bring us fulfillment and satisfaction.

Best Wishes,

Tazeen Rehman
