UNWA
held its General Meeting with a special
Mother’s Day programme on Saturday 8 May at the residence
of the Canadian High Commissioner. Our UNWA attendance of 40 members and
their guests were treated to a heartwarming performance to mark the
occasion by jazz vocalist, Ms. Ericka Smith-Thomas and her accompanist Ms.
Julie Lindsay. It was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to relax and
listen to these talented women.
Vanessa Brooks, President of UNWA opened the
meeting by greeting the members and introducing her guests which included
her own mother-in-law, Johney Brooks, Supi George, President of DAWC,
Karen Shrimpton of BWA, Helen Miloff of CIDA, and Julie Lindsay. Vanessa
recounted how, as so often happens in Dhaka, she first made connection
with Ericka Smith-Thomas through her mother’s good friend back home in New
York, who said: “You must meet……”
Ericka Smith-Thomas awakened our hearts with
a selection of songs that evoked family and well being for the Mother’s
Day theme: New Day, Bosanova, They can’t take that away from me, Candy,
Honeysuckle Rose, You have got to be taught, People who need people, Nice
work if you can get it, The Lady is a Tramp, Alfie, Old Work Song and
ended with The Need to Be. Ericka’s collaboration with her excellent
pianist Julie resulted in a most memorable concert of favourite and
enjoyable tunes.
Vanessa thanked the performers and wished
her mother-in-law and everyone a Happy Mother’s Day. Special thanks and
recognition went to Allison Thomas-Hessic and Vera de Prins for their
contribution to the successful Clothing Drive. Vanessa also presented Eva
Munk with a bouquet of flowers and thanked her for hosting the General
Meeting at the Danish Embassy residence in April.
Vanessa thanked Edith Campbell, wife of His
Excellency Mr. Gerry Campbell, High Commissioner for Canada for hosting
the Mother’s Day meeting at their residence.
Edith welcomed everyone to delicious
refreshments after the performance and we were able to enjoy looking out
onto the secluded garden, so near, yet so far, in it’s tranquility from
the bustle of Gulshan Avenue. The atmosphere made Mother’s Day very
special to us all. |
